How to Care for Your Antler Jewelry: Simple Tips to Keep Your Handmade Rings Looking Beautiful

One of the questions I get most often is: “How do I take care of my antler ring so it lasts?”

I love that question because it means you’re already treating your piece like the special, one-of-a-kind jewelry it is. Antler is a natural, organic material — beautiful, unique, and renewable — but it does need a little extra love compared to solid metal rings.

Here’s everything you need to know to keep your Antlered Doe jewelry looking its best, whether you have a fully hand-carved art piece or an everyday wearable style with metal.

First Things First: Antler Is Bone, Not Metal

All of my jewelry is sealed to protect it, but antler is still an organic material (similar to bone). It will show signs of being well-loved over time with frequent wear — little dings, scratches, or changes in the sealant are normal. The good news? With a few simple habits, you can dramatically extend how long it stays looking fresh.

I always include care instructions with every order, but here’s a deeper guide based on the type of piece you own.

General Care Rules for All Antler Jewelry

These apply no matter which style you have:

• Remove it for rough activities. Take your ring off before sports, heavy manual work, operating machinery, gardening, or anything that puts pressure or impact on your hands.

• Avoid water when possible. Even though many styles are now waterproof, I still recommend removing your jewelry before swimming, showering, or soaking in a bath. Prolonged moisture isn’t ideal for the antler or the sealant.

• Skip the chemicals. Hand sanitizer, lotions, perfumes, cleaning products, and dyes can dry out the antler or stain it. Put your ring on after these products have fully dried (or better yet, remove it first).

• Store it safely. Keep your jewelry in a soft pouch or jewelry box in a cool, dry place when you’re not wearing it. This prevents scratches and unnecessary exposure.

• Inspect regularly. Check settings and prongs (especially on sterling silver pieces) every so often. If anything feels loose, stop wearing it and reach out to me.
  

Caring for Fully Hand-Carved Antler Jewelry

These are true art pieces — completely carved by hand from solid antler with no metal against the skin (great for metal allergies). They’re thicker and more sculptural than typical rings, and they’re intended for special occasion wear rather than daily use.

• Treat them like wearable art.

• Remove before water, sleep, or any activity that could cause impact.

• Be mindful of dyes, pigments, and hand sanitizer — antler is porous and can stain or dry out.

• Because they’re solid antler, they will show wear with frequent use. That’s part of their story, but if you want them to stay near-pristine, save them for weddings, dinners, events, and special days.

I offer complimentary repairs on many of these pieces for the first year (some damage isn’t repairable, but I always try).

Caring for Inlay Styles (Titanium, Sterling Silver, or Stainless Steel)

These rings combine antler inlays with strong metals, making them more practical for regular wear.

Sterling silver styles: Waterproof, but still best removed before swimming or showering. Sterling is a softer metal, so be careful with prongs and avoid bending the band. It will tarnish over time (normal!), but a polishing cloth or sterling silver cleaner brings the shine right back. Never pair a sterling silver band with a stainless steel ring — the harder metal will damage the silver.

Titanium, tungsten, or stainless steel stylesThese are my most durable options and great for more active lifestyles. Clean with warm soapy water and a soft cloth. Avoid extreme impacts (especially with tungsten, which can shatter under heavy force — my warranty doesn’t cover shattered tungsten). Stainless steel engagement rings are particularly tough for everyday life.

Even with these stronger metals, the antler inlay can still crack under significant pressure, so I still recommend removing the ring for strenuous hand work.

Many people prefer to rotate their antler rings with a traditional metal set so the antler pieces stay beautiful longer. Both approaches are valid — it just depends on how you want to wear them.
