Behind the Scenes: How I Hand Carve Unique Antler Jewelry from Naturally Shed Deer Antlers

There’s something magical about holding a piece of the forest in your hand.
At The Antlered Doe, every ring, band, and carved piece begins as a naturally shed deer antler — a renewable gift from the wild that no animal was harmed to obtain. Since 2014, I’ve been turning these antlers into wearable art right here in Texas, and I still get butterflies every time I finish a new design.
Today I’m pulling back the curtain on exactly how that transformation happens — from the moment an antler arrives in my shop to the moment it ships out as a finished piece of jewelry that someone will wear on their wedding day or everyday adventures.
Why Naturally Shed Antler?
Deer shed their antlers every year. It’s a completely natural cycle. That means the material I use is ethical, sustainable, and truly renewable. No animals are harmed, and each antler carries its own unique grain, color, and texture shaped by the deer’s life and the land it lived on.
This is why no two pieces of my jewelry are ever identical. The antler itself decides a lot of the final look, and I love working with those natural variations instead of against them.
Step 1: Selecting the Right Antler
I carefully choose antlers for density, color, and structural integrity. Some are better suited for bold, fully carved statement pieces. Others work beautifully when paired with titanium, sterling silver, or stainless steel for everyday wearables.
I never bleach the antler. I want the natural color and character to shine through. That warm, organic tone is part of what makes antler jewelry feel so connected to the outdoors.
Step 2: Freehand Carving (No Stencils, Ever)
This is where the real magic happens — and where the hours disappear.
I hand-carve every design freehand. No stencils. No templates. Just the antler, my tools, and years of practice. Some days I spend 8–12 hours in the shop shaping, refining, and listening to what the material wants to become.
For certain designs I also use pyrography (a form of wood-burning adapted for antler) and careful painting to add depth and detail. The result is jewelry that feels alive — textured, organic, and one-of-a-kind.
Fully carved pieces are treated as wearable art. They’re thicker and more sculptural, perfect for special occasions. Everyday wearable styles combine antler with durable metals so you can actually live in them while still carrying a piece of the wild with you.
Step 3: Setting Stones & Finishing
Many of my engagement rings and bands feature stones that feel true to the outdoors — moss agate, turquoise, moonstone, and sparkling moissanite options. These are carefully set so the antler remains the star while the stone adds that little extra magic.
Once the carving and setting are complete, every piece is sealed for protection and then undergoes a final quality check. I stand behind my work with complimentary repairs on many styles because I want these pieces to last as long as the memories they mark.
